About Me
I am a full-time Career Counselor, employed by Boise State University to help students and alumni set and achieve their career goals. Although I do all aspects of career counseling, my specialty area is resumes. All resume appointments that come into the BSU Career Center are scheduled with me unless I am already booked. I frequently give presentations, and instruct classes and workshops on the topics of resume writing and cover letter writing.
In the various jobs I've held, I have worked on both sides of the hiring game. Before I started helping people become strong applicants for the jobs they're applying for, I was responsible for or involved in the process of hiring many employees. My first exposure to what makes a good or a bad resume came from reviewing application materials for jobs I was hiring for. This experience has allowed me to be able to look at resumes from the perspective of an employer.
I have a Masters degree in Counseling from Northern Arizona University, where I focused my energy on the study of career counseling, and worked as a career advisor. I also have a Bachelors degree in Psychology from the University of Central Florida. I am an active member of NCDA (National Career Development Association) and ICGA (Idaho Career Guidance Association).
The trends in employment practices change all the time, and therefore, an effective Resume Writer cannot live in a bubble, relying on their own ideas and the strategies they've used for years. I currently work with several highly experienced former Human Resources Managers, with whom I frequently discuss ideas, perspectives, and trends in resume writing. In addition, working with the Career Center allows me the opportunity to frequently interact with local and national employers, which keeps me updated on current hiring practices and preferences.
